Timelessness

2021

Walter Miranda

During the covid-19 pandemic, secluded in my studio due to the Lockdown, I produced 69 works that were part of the exhibition “Insular Time” held in November 2022 at the Mahavidya Cultural space. These works include the series of three paintings called Timelessness 1, 2 and 3.

The title of the series refers to the awareness that time has become paralyzed during isolation. Suddenly, the planet became ubiquitous in people's minds in a timeless, in an integral way. This sensation inspired me to create these three works that show all continents simultaneously in a single image. So I took advantage of the framework of some wall clocks that I had won for being broken.

The spread of the pandemic across all continents has made most people aware of the finitude of the planet. In all regions, atmospheric and noise pollution has been drastically reduced. Silence reigned over the big cities. The impossibility of locomotion caused in many people the feeling of a frozen time in which nothing different happened and, to escape the monotony, many tried to occupy this static time with physical activities at home or through the internet. With that, the planet had a little rest from the stress caused by the consequences of disorganized territorial occupation actions and human beings were able to review philosophical concepts about their existence and the quality of life provided by the currently dominated technology. Whether this will have positive results, only time will tell.
